A baby photoshoot is one of the few things you cannot reschedule. A newborn stays newborn for about a fortnight. A baby learns to sit at roughly six months and then never sits still again. This guide sets out exactly when to book a baby photoshoot in Lucknow, what happens during a session, how to keep your baby safe and comfortable, and what actually drives the cost — so you can plan it once and plan it properly.
Babies change faster in the first year than at any other point in life. Four windows give distinctly different pictures, and each one closes.
Newborn, 5 to 14 days. This is the only window where a baby still curls into the shape they held in the womb and sleeps deeply enough to be posed. Skin is at its softest and the tiny details — fingers, eyelashes, the curve of an ear — photograph beautifully.
Three months. Neck control is arriving and the first genuine, unprompted smiles appear. These are the most expressive early portraits you will get.
Six to eight months. The sitting stage is the most forgiving age of the four. Baby sits unaided, engages with the camera and is not yet crawling away. If you are booking only one session in the first year, this is the safest choice.
Eleven to twelve months. The cake smash. Messy, loud, and the single most joyful set of images most families own.
Both work — they simply produce different pictures.
A studio gives controlled, consistent light, a reliably warm room and access to wraps, baskets and backdrops. Newborn and cake smash sessions almost always go better in a studio for exactly these reasons.
A home session gives something else: your baby in their own cot, in their own nursery, with their own light. The images are softer and more documentary, and babies settle faster in a familiar room. Many Lucknow homes — particularly across Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar and Vibhuti Khand — have large east-facing windows that deliver excellent morning light for this.
This matters more than any styling decision. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that infants be placed on their back on a firm, flat surface for all sleep in the first year, and that any tummy-down time happen only while the baby is awake and under constant adult supervision.
In practice, that means a few non-negotiables during a session: an adult stays within arm's reach of the baby at all times; the room is kept genuinely warm, not merely comfortable for adults; the baby is fed and settled before posing begins; and no pose is held that the baby resists. Any composite or suspended-prop image should be built safely in post-production rather than attempted for real. A photographer who cannot explain their safety practice to you clearly is not the right photographer for a newborn.
Book the morning. Babies are at their most settled in the first half of the day, and Lucknow's light is kindest before eleven.
Feed just before you arrive, then bring another feed with you. Pack more spare clothes and nappies than you think you need. Keep outfits simple — plain creams, soft neutrals and gentle pastels photograph far better than busy prints, and they keep attention on your baby's face rather than the fabric.
Finally, allow more time than you expect. A newborn session runs two to three hours; an older-baby session around ninety minutes. Very little of that is shooting. Most of it is feeding, soothing and waiting for the right moment — and that patience is precisely what separates a good baby portrait from a stiff one.
For styling inspiration specifically — wraps and baskets, sibling and family set-ups, and the close-up detail frames parents treasure most — see our companion piece on baby shoot ideas for your newborn's first moments.
Rather than quoting a number that will be out of date by next season, it is more useful to know what you are actually paying for. Five things move the price: the length of the session, the number of fully edited images delivered, whether props, wraps and outfits are provided for you, whether the shoot happens in-studio or at your home, and whether you add a printed album or framed prints.
Newborn sessions sit at the higher end because they take longer and demand specialist handling. Sitter and cake smash sessions are shorter and generally cost less. For a current, tailored quote, see our baby photoshoot service page or write to the studio directly.
The strongest first-year collections begin in the third trimester. A maternity photoshoot at around 30 to 34 weeks, followed by a newborn session in the first fortnight, gives you a continuous story rather than two unrelated sets of pictures — and it means your photographer already knows your family before the newborn window opens. Many parents then add a family photography session around the first birthday, so grandparents and siblings are in the frame too.
There are four strong windows: newborn at 5 to 14 days, the 3-month smile stage, the 6-to-8-month sitting stage and the 11-to-12-month cake smash. If you can only book one, choose the newborn window or the sitting stage.
Two to three hours for a newborn session, around ninety minutes for an older baby. Most of that time is feeding, settling and changing — a session rushed into one hour usually produces a distressed baby and fewer usable frames.
A studio gives controlled light, warmth and props, which suits newborn and cake smash sessions. A home session gives softer, more documentary images and a calmer baby, and works well if you have a room with a large window.
Session length, number of edited images, whether props and outfits are provided, studio versus home, and whether you add an album or prints. Newborn sessions typically cost more because they take longer and require specialist handling.
During your third trimester, ideally weeks 30 to 34. Newborn sessions are booked against a due date rather than a fixed date, so the studio holds a tentative window for you.
EDP Studio photographs newborn, sitter, cake smash and family sessions across Lucknow — in studio or in your own home. Newborn dates are held against your due date, so the earlier you speak to us, the better the window we can protect for you.
